The event is named after Dante, the Yorkshire-trained winner of the Derby substitute at Newmarket in 1945. Established in 1958, it serves as a major trial for the Derby.[1] The first running was won by Bald Eagle.
The present race grading system was introduced in 1971, and the Dante Stakes initially held Group 3 status.[2] It was promoted to Group 2 level in 1980.
In total, eleven winners of the race have achieved victory in the Derby. The first was St Paddy in 1960, and the most recent was Desert Crownin 2022. The 2014 Dante Stakes winner, The Grey Gatsby, subsequently won France's equivalent of the Derby, the Prix du Jockey-Club while the 2015 runner-up, Jack Hobbs, and 2021 winner Hurricane Lane, both won the Irish Derby.
The Dante Stakes is currently staged on the second day of York's three-day Dante Festival meeting.

JBB FORM RATINGS :
1) CANBERRA LEGEND (106) (1) EPICTETUS (106) (3) FLYING HONOURS (105)
Decent field for for the Dante with 12 runners going to post, for what looks very competitive contest on ground described as Good (G/F Places)
Epictetus has been put in favourite for John & Thady Gosden ,having won Epsom Derby trial last month when odds on favourite, though looked far from impressive when beating Hadrianus by under length , that form hasn’t really worked out either with the second & third well beaten since .Has to be respected on the pick of his two-year-old form , though others make more appeal at the prices .
The unbeaten CANBERRA LEGEND should go well after winning the Fielden listed Stakes at Newmarket last time ,that looked decent effort having not handled the dip at Newmarket ,though came home strongly once meeting the rising ground to win shade cosily. This Australia colt looks sure to improve over this longer trip .Odds around 13/2 look very fair each-way value ,especially with bookmakers paying 4 places .
Sea The Stars colt Flying Honours ,had some fair form last season winning (3 out 5),including winning the group three Zetland Stakes at Newmarket in October , though that form looks nothing special with the second Blanchland well beaten in Fielden Stakes since. Will need further improvement to land this group two contest , though you can never rule out these Appleby runners .
Of the others the Wood Ditton winner Passenger has been supplemented for race for Sir Michael Stoute ,having missed his engagement at Chester last week.Takes big step up in class from Newmarket maiden ,though looks interesting runner for top connections .
The Aidan O’Brien unbeaten colt Continuous was good winner in group three company in France at the backend of last season on testing ground ,that wasn’t the strongest group three contest ,though looks open to improvement this season .
