Navan Vintage Crop Stakes Preview (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 )

Navan racecourse hosts both Flat and jumps racing and is home to races such as the Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle, and Grade 2 Monksfield Hurdle, which were both won by Death Duty in 2016. The Ballysax Stakes and Vintage Crop Stakes are the most notable races on the Flat, the latter won in 2016 by subsequent Derby winner Harzand. The track itself is left-handed and one and a half miles in extent, with the last three and a half furlongs providing a stiff finish. Conditions can become very soft and testing in the winter, so the ability to see out the trip is crucial. The chase course has nine fences to a circuit.

JERRYBESTBETS FORM RATINGS :

(1) SEARCH FOR A SONG (115) (2) BARON SAMEDI (111) (3) CAMARRA (107)

With the withdrawal of Princess Zoe.Just eight runners go to post for intresting staying listed contest at Navan .

No surprise the mare Search For A Song has been put stong favourite .Has some very useful form, including winning G1 Irish St Leger in 2020 .Not quite as good last season ,though bolted up by 9L in G3 Company at Curragh in September.Looks the one to beat on pick of her form ,though has been beaten first time out for the last two seasons ,including in listed company .Also Trainer Dermot Weld hasn't been best form this season, only (3 out 51) since January & (0 out 22) in last 2 weeks.Looks worth taking on her seasonal reappearance at short odds, with stable struggling for winners  .

Last years winner BARON SAMEDI will need to bounce back after disappointing run in Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan in March ,though had some decent form last season ,including winning the G2 Belmont Gold Cup in New York & finishing creditable 2.5L third in Irish St Leger behind Sonnyboyliston.Has to defy 5lb group two penalty ,though goes well here at Navan (2 out 2).Trainer Joseph O 'Brien has won the race the last three years .Odds around 9-2 look solid e-w value in race lacking strengh in depth .

Of the others Camorra looks the most interesting, looked progressive sort last season ,including winning 1M 4F group three contest at Leopardstown in September .Bit disappointing on final start last season at Naas ,though that was on heavy ground .Will be suited by this better ground returning to this longer trip .
