Newmarket 2000 Guineas day !!!

Some top quality racing action over the weekend at Newmarket with first two classics of the season. On Saturday we have the colts classic the 2000 Guineas and  Sunday see's filly's classic the 1000 Guineas.

Hot favourite Frankel looks very difficult to beat in 2000 Guineas, though at around 4-7 makes very limited appeal. Most of the bookmakers have now opened  betting without Frankel and this is the market that I'm  interested in .

2000 GUINEAS GROUP ONE BETTING  W/O FRANKEL 3.10 NEWMARKET
RODERIC O CONNOR  £100 EACH-WAY - 1PT EACH -WAY
@ 9-2 LADBROKES 1/4 ODDS 1-2-3 .

VERDICT: Roderic O 'Connor ,Pathfork & Castmento look the three to concentrate on here all three are group one winners last season. RODERIC O' CONNOR  second to Frankel in the Dewhurst looks the stronger form and with the Aidan O Brien stable looking more forward this season and Ryan Moore also looking positive jockey booking .9-2 looks the value bet in this market.

Staking strategy !!!

Interesting article on staking strategy the way forward by Peter Sackville. To my knowledge most serious gamblers use a point based system or like myself level stakes. After reading this article its got me thinking which is the best staking strategy??

There are many reasons why only 2% of people betting on horse racing tomorrow will actually make a profit. Only 2% are blessed with real information and most others are second guessing the outcome. There is one common reason however why even accomplished bettors can lose over the period of one betting year however, and it can be to do with something as simple as staking!

People from all walks of life use various means, methods and systems to bet on horse racing. Many have good days, more have bad days and that actually is how it can go for even the most hardened professional on occasions.

The one single thing that almost every professional gambler will have in place and be using religiously is a controlled, planned and business like staking plan.

Unfortunately so many of the consistent losing punters betting on horse racing tomorrow, next week or next year have one thing in common. Many just do not spend enough time or effort learning one of the most crucial aspects of betting - controlling their finances!

Strike rates matter, especially if most of your winners come from the low to mid odds category. In fact if is fair to say strike rates always matter. You have to be picking horses with prices that actually win more often than the price! Which is one of the hardest things to do.

A Great Staking Plan Can Sky Rocket Your Betting Bank and Help to Protect it!

If you are using a traditional level stakes betting plan, then you had better hope long term that you are seriously good at choosing your selections or you are privileged to inside information. The fact is that betting one point here and one point there gets you somewhere slowly if you pick winners.

But what if you started using a cumulative staking plan that could increase your profits made by 100's of %? And help protect you bank during a 'winter' of losses!

There can only be one

The staking plan that you must always use is the 5% Cumulative Sliding Stake Plan. It is very straight forward to adopt and anyone unable to work out the maths really should not be betting in the first place!

You simply always, without fail stake 5% of your betting bank on a selection. Either 5 to win or 2.5% each way. There is no room here to show quite how effective it can be, but this plan helps to protect you when you lose as you reduce your next stake accordingly.

On the other hand with a run of quick winners you can treble your bank within weeks, as the amplification of the increased stakes starts to take effect. You do not have to bet 5% if you want more security you could choose 3 for example. The golden rule is that you have to stick with this rigidly, at all times, during all bets. Five however is very easy to work out, as only half of ten a four year should be able to do the maths

To make more money long term when betting on horse racing tomorrow ,start playing the game like a pro and instigate the only staking plan that you will ever need.If you are good at picking winners but have yet to make it pay ,practice this on a paper account and see how you get on.

Disappointing Day Disappointing Month !!!

Wednesday was once again another disappointing day with Libranno only finishing fourth in 6 furlong listed contest at Ascot .

No excuses for Libranno had every chance after trying to make all the running ,though only beaten 1.25 lenghs could only manage forth place behind 14-1 outsider Perfect Tribute.

April has just been one them months not great deal has gone right and this looks like being the worse month since last July by quite some way .Long term profits are what count so one bad month is not a  disaster, hopefully we can turn things around in May .

On to Thursdays racing we have two flat cards at Brighton & Bath both cards look very low on quality with very few runners ,though hardly a surprise on rock hard ground. No suitable betting opportunities on Thursday.

Wednesdays best bets!!

Interesting days racing with Four flat cards on Wednesday at Ascot,Pontefract,Newcastle & Kempton .

Ascot stage high quality meeting which features the  Group 3 Sagaro stakes over 2 miles and two decent looking listed contest.Going concentrate on the 6 furlong listed stakes at Ascot 4.15

6F LISTED STAKES CLASS 1 ASCOT 4.15
LIBRANNO: Decent 2 year old last season for Richard Hannon winning three times including two group 2 races at Newmarket & Goodwood ,ran fair second on seasonal reappearance behind Native Khan in craven stakes over 1 mile(looked non stayer). Will be suited by the return to 6 furlongs and the drop in class .

VERDICT : Margot Did looks the main danger receiving 12lb from Libranno ,ran some decent races last season including finishing second twice here at Ascot in group 3 Albany stakes & Princess Margret stakes ,though was slightly disappointing on her last two starts including getting
beat when short priced favourite in listed race at Salisbury.

LIBRANNO has to concede plenty weight in this listed contest ,though looks the class act here after winning two group 2 races over 6 furlongs last season. 11-4 looks very fair price.

Weekly results / round up !!

Sundays bet on Always The Lady was very disappointing finishing well beaten forth behind the Henry Cecil trained Arizona Jewel after being well  supported in market 7-2 into 9-4 ,had no real excuses in the race itself with perfect position in second place turning for home ,though never picked up most disappointing effort.

April has been disappointing month and to be honest I have struggled to find good quality betting opportunities with only four bets so far this month .The selections have not really been up to the normal standard, though not disaster with losses - £464 / 4.64 ,the selections have just not performed well enough this month

Its not all doom and gloom with still small profit on the year ,though will need to show some improvement over upcoming weeks.

THE RESULTS :

ALWAYS THE LADY :Promising debut in decent looking 1 mile fillies maiden at Goodwood last September finishing 1.5 lengh second behind the Luca Cumani trained Poplin ,that looks decent form with the third horse that day the John Gosden trained Umseyat winning easily next time.Looks open to plenty of improvement over this longer trip and Oaks entry

VERDICT : Interesting fillies maiden with most of the top stables represented ,the Michael Stoute trained Rien Ne Vas Plus looks possible danger after finishing promising 6TH of 18 in good 7 furlong maiden at Newmarket and looks open to plenty improvement over this longer trip being half sister to Derby winner North Light and Oaks entry.Quite a few well bred newcomers in the race ,though they will have to well above average to win this first time of asking.

The Clive Cox trained ALWAYS THE LADY second at Goodwood looks solid form and should improve over this longer trip 7-2 looks fair value.

Ten Golden Rules of Betting !!!

Good article written back in 2008 by Simon Rowlands who blogs on Betting.betfair.com website, well worth read if you are interested in gambling wisdom .

1) Value - the number one rule. Back enough selections at odds bigger than are merited by their chances and you have cracked it. Most other rules are ways of bringing this to pass or of ensuring that you capitalise on this advantage. Value can involve backing something at 1.1when it should be at 1.01 or at 40.0 when it should be 20.0, or of laying the bets to others when the opposite applies. The problem in betting on horseracing and other sports is that it is not possible to know for sure what represents value in an individual instance, as would be the case with cards or coin tosses. Nonetheless, value as a concept is an inescapable truth. Betting is, in effect, an extended experiment in determining how good you are at judging value.

2) Take responsibility - if something goes wrong with your bet, do not automatically blame the jockey (who you knew would be riding your selection), the tipster you followed or the statistics you used (in both cases, it was your choice). Most of the best punters I have known have considered whether they have made a mistake with their bet - even when it has won - and sought to learn from the experience. They have taken responsibility for their actions, in other words. Bad punters almost always do not.

3) Fear and greed - thanks go to Andrew Black, founder of Betfair and one-time professional punter, for this gem of wisdom. As "Bert" once said, good punters have the right balance between fear and greed. Most bad punters are too greedy, trying to win too much at one go or increasing their stakes the moment they become successful (or greedily chasing their losses when they are not). Then again, I am too cautious by half. I frequently have not pressed what advantage I do have and am forever looking gift horses in the mouth. Try to find the balance appropriate to the type of betting you are engaged in.

4) Discipline - do not give in to the temptation to bet on more events than is suitable given your knowledge and preparation. Remember that you have the power not to bet at all. Do not chase your losses or get carried away with your wins. If in doubt, get up, walk away and come back another day. Similarly, do not cut corners in your preparation - betting tends to punish those that do - and discipline yourself to bet only when you are in a position to do it well.

5) Adapt or die - even in the eight or so years that Betfair has been in existence, things have changed markedly. More sophisticated forms of analysis are available and where the edges are have changed greatly. I started off laying books, primarily in the place market, moved on to the win market, did a bit of in-running betting before it became quite so popular, spent some time (when I was busier with other things) betting on individual race winning-distance markets in their infancy and have reverted to fairly old-fashioned on-the-nose backing (and laying) in recent times. Betfair provides the punter with huge choice and flexibility. It is my experience that, on Betfair at least, when one door closes another usually opens. Do not get stuck behind a closed door.

6) Play to your strengths - while point five urges the need to be versatile and adaptable, you should never bite off more than you can chew and should always play to your strengths. My knowledge of horseracing has been built up over decades, whereas my knowledge of Big Brother is short-term and superficial. It does not prevent me from betting on the latter, but I am well advised to know my limitations in this area. By a similar token, I feel comfortable with numerical analysis of horseracing - ratings, sectionals and the like - but far less so with paddock inspection, for instance. Paddock inspection is important, but I do not immediately leap on something that catches my eye before a race when others are better placed to do this.

7) Staking and money management - the Kelly Criterion is, to the best of my knowledge, the last word in correct staking. Even if you do not act on every last symbol of the Kelly formula (I do not), be guided by the basic principles: you should stake a proportion of your bank in accordance with both the edge you perceive you have and the likelihood of the event happening. More generally, bad punters tend to vary their stakes alarmingly, ramping them up markedly the moment they get a few winners (or, in some cases, a few losers). Set aside money for betting and manage it so that you are in a position to capitalise on opportunities when they arise. Be consistent: play the long game.

8) Pace yourself - if you are betting at all seriously make sure you find time for other things, and do not become so obsessed with turning a buck that you burn yourself out. I used to give myself incentives and rewards for good behaviour and good results when I was betting for a living. I operated better if I had some "down time" a few times each week, and I made sure I took holidays. I imagine something similar applies to everyone.

9) Question received wisdoms - betting, and in particular horseracing, is full of received wisdoms. Some of them stand closer inspection (the primacy of "value" is a good example) but many do not. It is a human trait, encouraged by evolution, to look for patterns, and it is a human weakness, punished by experience, to see patterns where they do not exist. Pace biases, draw biases, track biases, golden highways, yardstick handicapping, trends, favourite jockeys, five-year-olds in the Champion Hurdle, going preferences of the offspring of sires: some good has been spoken and written about each of these but even more balderdash and piffle. Be sceptical, without closing your mind. There is a lot of mileage in going against the crowd.

10) There are few golden rules - betting on racing has had an enduring appeal in no small part because it is pitched at just the right level of complexity for the human mind. It has a habit of punishing the grimly deterministic and the fickle backer of hunches alike. Remain flexible: use judgement and intuition where it is appropriate.

Waiting Game !!!

Not great deal happening at the moment, been over week since the last bet and again no bets today ,suitable betting opportunities have been very difficult to find this week in non handicap flat races.

Wednesday is similar story with four flat cards, two on All Weather at Southwell & Kempton and two turf cards at Epsom & Newcastle ,if you like competitive handicaps you have plenty of choice today with  19 handicaps.

Epsom stages the main meeting today with the two feature races being the City & Suburban handicap over 10 furlongs & Investec Derby Trial ,though you could hardly describe the race as any sort of Derby trial with only five runners in the race and Musawama the only runner entered in the Epsom Derby.

April is never the easiest month to find suitable betting opportunities on the flat ,with the season just getting under way , I am quite prepared to wait and wait for the right betting opportunities to come along.

Weekly results / round up !!

Not been the greatest start to April with another losing week ,making that three losing weeks in row, this week was similar too the last two weeks with both bets running fair enough races without winning.Loss on the week -£230 / 2.30 pts

The good part of my staking method it can withstand long losing runs without doing much damage to the betting bank.Looking through the last 10 bets there has only been one winner ,though seven bets have been placed.Disappointing to have only 1 winner from 10 bets ,though this hasn't really damaged the betting bank with only 4.40 pt loss

Doesn't matter how good of gambler you are there will always be losing streaks through the year. Its always important to have the right staking plan and betting bank in place, losses can then be kept to an absolute minimum when you go through that losing streak.

THE RESULTS:

ON THE WEEK:
2 BETS ) 0 WINNERS ) LOSS -£230 /2.30 PTS)

Sitting out Saturday !!!

Plenty racing on Saturday with five flat cards and Jump fans have the Scottish Grand National meeting at Ayr .

Newbury stage very decent card featuring three group 3 races ,including the reappearance of 2000 guineas favourite Frankel in Greenham stakes ,though Newbury have top quality card featuring plenty good races , including some very interesting maiden races later on the card ,though just couldn't find any suitable betting opportunities .

One of them Saturdays plenty racing ,though very difficult to find any good quality betting opportunities ,so it will just be watching brief for me on Saturday.

Newmarket Craven Meeting !!!

Wednesday see's the start of the Newmarket's Craven meeting ,will be travelling down too Newmarket early Wednesday morning from sunny Lowestoft.

Looking forward to what looks decent card with the highlight being the group three Nell Gwyn stakes at 4.10 ,though this looks quite open race with Maqaasid ,Elshabakiya and Ladies Are Forever all having decent chances.Going concentrate on 6 furlong Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-0 Sprint Newmarket 3.00

6F TATTERSALLS SPRINT CLASS 2 NEWMARKET 3.00
KHOR SHEED :Won twice last season both over 6 furlongs at Newmarket ,including winning listed race on July course in June & Sales race over C&D in September .Also finished decent third in Sweet Solera stakes behind the useful White Moonstone over 7 furlongs at Newmarket .Will be suited by this drop in class.

VERDICT : Neebras looks the main danger on last years second behind Librano in Group two July stakes at Newmarket ,though hasn't ran since last July .KHOR SHEED had some decent form in better races last season, looks to have ideal conditions 6 furlongs on fast ground .7-2 looks fair price.

Another frustrating day !!!

Tuesdays bet on Praxios could only finish third in 9 furlong maiden stakes at Wolverhampton ,though more frustrating was Valdaw being non runner in the race leaving only seven runners.

That can be problem placing each-way bets with bookmakers in 8 runner races, with always the possibility of non runners and not getting paid for third place, though the place odds would been lot shorter with betfair you always get paid out on that third place.Instead of  £50.00 loss ,it ended up very disappointing day losing £200.00

Been frustrating run of results since early March with only two winners from 10 bets ,though six have been placed .Don't think the selections have been that bad, most of the bets have ran well without winning which does happen over the season, just need a change of luck, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Tuesdays best bets !!

Three flat cards on Tuesday the only turf card at Folkestone looks complete waste of time with very few runners ,though hardly a surprise with such low prize money on offer , going concentrate on the 1 mile 1 furlong maiden stakes at Wolverhampton.

1 MILE 1F 103YDS CLASS 6 MAIDEN STAKES WOLVERHAMPTON 4.20
PRAXIOS : Promising run in 8.6 furlong maiden at Wolverhampton back in November , staying on well to finish never nearer second after getting outpaced in early stages behind the Michael Jarvis trained Boogie Shoes, that looks fair form with the winner rated 82 .Looks open to plenty improvement stepping up in trip.

VERDICT :  Barry Hills trained Fadhaa made promising debut back in October finishing 6TH of 18 in fair maiden at Doncaster over 7 furlongs .Looks open to plenty improvement over this longer trip, though with trainer Barry Hills not being in the best form 0 from 14 in April, looks too short in market at around 11-8 mark.

PRAXIOS has solid maiden form at Wolverhampton and should improve over this longer trip being half brother too Presvis. At around 7-2 looks fair value.

Another very quiet week with just the one bet on Wednesday at Beverley with Dabbers Ridge finishing third in 1 mile selling stakes .Very limited betting opportunities on the flat this week ,which had to be expected with the main focus on Aintree's Grand National meeting. Small loss on the week -£34.00 / 0.34 pts

The flat season finally kicks into gear next week with some top quality action starting with the two day Craven meeting at Newmarket on Wednesday & Thursday followed by the Dubai Duty Free two day fixture at Newbury on Friday & Saturday.Hopefully we will have a few more suitable betting opportunities next week.

Wednesdays reflections !!!

Wednesdays bet on Dabbers Ridge in 1 mile selling stakes at Beverley was slightly frustrating after finishing close third beaten half lengh and short head.

Dabbers Ridge travelled well in the race and  looked likely winner when leading inside the final furlong and traded as short as 1-7 in running on betfair, though didn't find great deal and had to settle for third behind Rowan Lodge. Not too much damage done with £34.00 loss on the day.

Wednesdays best bets !!

Plenty flat racing action on Wednesday with four cards , two on the turf at Nottingham & Beverley and two All weather cards from Lingfield & Kempton ,going concentrate on the 1 mile selling stakes at Beverley

1MILE 100YDS SELLING STAKES CLASS 6 BEVERLEY 2.10
DABBERS RIDGE : Dual C&D Winner at Beverley ,won four times in 2010 including winning this race last year .Ran some decent races last season including winning class 4 handicap at Pontefract off mark 75, also finished good third in class 3 handicap at Ascot in July .Ran fair fifth on his seasonal reappearance at Wolverhampton last time.

VERDICT : Opus Maximus looks the big danger in this seller, 8LB clear on official  BHA handicap ratings and did win three times in 2010, including winning two class 4 handicaps and finished good second last time in fair claimer behind Erinjay at Kempton, though not the most reliable of horses and looks too short in the market.

At the prices DABBERS RIDGE looks the better value bet, has good record at the track from four starts 3113 ,should come on for his recent run at Wolverhampton and will be suited dropping back into selling company for first time since winning this race last year.

With having a quiet weekend its given me time to analyze the past seven months results, its always important for me to analyze all the different type races I'm placing bets on and which type races are making the biggest  profits or losses.

My bets are split into six different categories over the past seven months :
Group races.Listed.Maidens.Claimers.Selling Stakes.Condition Races

 THE RESULTS 6 DIFFERENT CATEGORIES:
ALL BETS 1PT EACH -WAY

GROUP RACES :7 BETS )2 WINNERS )1 PLACED ) LOSS -1.44 pts
WIN STRIKE RATE 28.57 % ( ROI LOSS -11 % )

LISTED RACES :9 BETS )4 WINNERS )2 PLACED ) PROFIT + 8.57
WIN STRIKE RATE 44.44 % (ROI PROFIT +49.25 )

MAIDEN RACES:17 BETS )4 WINNERS )10 PLACED) PROFIT +11.66
WIN STRIKE RATE  23.52 % (ROI PROFIT +35.15)

CLAIMERS : 32 BETS )10 WINNERS )11 PLACED ) PROFIT +23.60
WIN STRIKE RATE 31.25 % (ROI PROFIT +36.98)

SELLING STAKES:13 BETS)4 WINNERS)7 PLACED) PROFIT +9.10
WIN STRIKE RATE 30.76 % (ROI PROFIT +35.13)

CONDITION RACES :2 BETS ) 0 WINNERS) 1 PLACED )LOSS -3.00

ANALYZING THE RESULTS:
Looking at the results makes interesting reading .

with 40% of the total bets are in CLAIMING RACES ,which also returns the biggest profits of 23.60pts.

LISTED RACES have the highest winning strike rate 44.44 % and return the best ROI of +49.25 % .though thats from only small sample of seven bets.

MAIDEN RACES have been fairly profitable, good win and place strike rate 82.64%.though only 23.52 % win strike rate.

SELLING STAKES have the highest win & place strike rate 84.74,with fairly decent profits from only 13 bets.

GROUP RACES have not been profitable ,with loss of 1.44 pts ,from small sample of 7 bets ,looking through the results I have noticed three of the selections were on non UK racing returning disappointing loss of 4.34 pts

CONDITION RACES are running at 3pt loss ,though impossible to make an opinion after only 2 bets.

After checking the results I have discovered that the non UK results have been very poor, which includes Group and listed races from Ireland , France & Dubai from five bets. no winners with 8.34 pts loss .With these poor results don't see much point in continuing on betting on non UK races, which will be the only change this upcoming flat season.

Very happy with the other four categories.Claimers .Listed .Selling Stakes.maidens, which have made good profits over the past seven months .Hopefully it will continue this flat season.

Blank Saturday !!!

Two flat cards on Saturday at Doncaster and All Weather card from Kempton .Doncaster's card looks very difficult with some very competitive handicaps, the feature race being the 1 mile William Hill Lincoln handicap.Interesting races to watch these big competitive handicaps ,though the complete opposite too the races that I'm looking to get involved in.

Kempton stage good quality All Weather card on the polytrack ,featuring two decent looking listed races ,though after studying both races there are no suitable betting opportunities in either race.

Been very quiet week  with one losing bet on Thursday, though in no rush in what is always tricky first month on the flat. Will continue to wait for the right betting opportunities to come along.
